I am a caretaker of my mom who has Alzheimer’s. My husband and I have found this office to be unhelpful. The support classes are at very inconvenient times for anybody with a job. They are so far apart, every 4 weeks or more, that they provide a drop in the bucket in terms of a listening ear. When I mentioned this to them the response was, “We also have virtual support” and “thank you for your feedback” but nothing is done. Part of the support is being able to get out of the house and be with other people experiencing this. Not stuck behind a computer screen experiencing even more isolation. It’s also quite clear that the young staff members working there have never had to deal personally with Alzheimer’s and dementia and only know it from textbooks and theory. If I could give feedback that is taken seriously by someone who has actual experience with Alzheimer’s I wouldn’t need to leave a review. Also I sent an email asking to sign up for a socialization class for my mother. I was told I wouldn’t hear back from the person doing the registration. When I did hear back I had to fill out a 3 page form filled with sensitive health information that didn’t work properly. So I had to print it and scan it and email it. Then after all this I get an email saying she can’t join without a doctors clearance. That now entails making an appointment driving her there. Dealing with her doctor anxiety and paying for him to fill the form. All this on the shoulders of a person already experiencing burnout. They are more interested in covering all their liability angles and supporting is a secondary concern. If they had real experience in Alzheimer’s they would know how all this feels. I told this to a friend who is in the same situation and she said “So I’m not missing anything then” I said no you can skip them. Hopefully this office can actually improve this situation by offering more in person support classes at better times with more experienced staff and make their classes more accessible.
