Who are you searching for?

Care centres on comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Support extends to the whole family, including bereavement.

Often partially or fully funded through the health system.

Palliative and hospice care focus on comfort, dignity, and quality of life through a serious illness: pain and symptom relief, emotional and spiritual support, and help for the whole family, including bereavement. It can begin alongside treatment, not only at the very end.

Care can be provided at home, in a hospice, in hospital, or within a care community, and much of it is publicly funded in Canada. The kindest step is usually to ask the care team about palliative support earlier than feels necessary. Our palliative and hospice care guide explains the options and how to access them.

Palliative & Hospice Care: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between palliative and hospice care?
Palliative care is comfort-focused care that can start at any stage of a serious illness, even alongside treatment. Hospice care is palliative care in the final months, when the focus shifts fully to comfort. Both center on quality of life.
Is palliative care covered in Canada?
Largely, yes. Palliative care delivered through the health system, at home, in hospital, or in a hospice, is often publicly funded, though some hospice residences rely partly on donations. Coverage details vary by province.
Where can palliative care be provided?
At home with a visiting team, in a dedicated hospice residence, in hospital, or within a long-term care or retirement community. The right setting depends on the person's needs and wishes and what is available locally.
When should palliative care start?
Earlier than most families expect. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis of a serious illness to manage symptoms and support the family, not only in the final days. Ask the care team about it sooner rather than later.
