First I want to start by saying that I'm grateful to have been a resident at this shelter as I gained access to so many resources and it was a stepping stone for me to get to a better chapter of my life. I joined maxxine wright shelter when I was about 8 months pregnant. For context I'm an immigrant so a program like this is God sent.Much needed refuge.I arrived at Maxxine Wright shortly after my arrival in canada..I had nothing for my baby ,I had no idea where to start ,I was worried ,I was anxious but the minute I got to maxxine wright all that went out the window.I got enrolled to the clinic that's in the same building, got referred to resources like baby go round and such like, that help with baby necessities etc..Safe to say by the time I was giving birth ,I was well equipped.I had everything I needed and so did my baby.I even got a doula that advocated for me during labour and birth, wow!Seeing that I am all alone in the country, this was amazing!I didn't feel alone at a time when I was most vulnerable. I would like to state that whatever negative statement/experience I share is not to bring down the programme but to positively critique aspects that I believe could use some improvement and /or change. When it comes to the staff at the shelter I have mixed opinions. Some staff were condescending and patronizing rather than supportive and guiding. At times I'd feel less than or rather I'd feel like a little girl and not an adult ,a mother. Sometimes some staff would extremely ration food, lock food stuffs away and only put them out when they have expired or almost. To be honest that was humiliating,to say the least. The safety checks ,especially the one in the morning felt very invasive,I understand the routine but surely there's got be another way other than a loud knock on the door at 7am that sometimes would be accompanied with your door being opened without consent. The showers ,oh my!There is almost never any hot water unless very late at night or very early morning .This was very inconveniencing especially fresh from postpartum when all you need is a sizzling hot shower. They always said they will fix it but never did. Please work on that. Anyway that said I'd like to give a special thanks to a few staff;Kathy,Jill,Crystal oh Crystal thanks for the dinners you'd cook for us,the baking classes ,cupcake decorating ,the ginger bread decorating on Christmas!loved that! You are amazing Crystal. Jill thanks for always helping us clean up the kitchen ,wash dishes, when you were around .As a new mom postpartum this was such a relief and burden lifted. Lenora is also very warm and kind ,whenever she'd come for her shift she'd make sure to put out napkins ,candy ,snacks etc such small gestures meant the world, made me feel heard seen and appreciated. All said and done I appreciate having been a part of maxxine wright. It was my baby's first home for the 1st 5 months of her life and for that, Thankyou✨️

So I’ve been living in the shelter for a few months and all I’m going to say is some staff are very nice and there’s quite a few who are really rude and who I don’t get along with one of them Has ignored me twice and made extremely ignorant comments when I was having almost panic attacks One of them named Catherine accused me of being on drugs and then denied it to the manager and the manager did nothing but gaslit me and called me a liar also told me I had an hour to clean my bedroom or I was going to be evicted when I pay rent here they are nothing but rude the food here is moldy very unprofessionalAnd should not be working with pregnant women or Babies and should not be working with pregnant women or babies I was accused of letting rats in my unit when I never did and they had an exterminator come in and put a poisonous box in my room when I’m pregnant i’ve been feeling nauseous ever since The manager is very close with Catherine not to mention there is no hot water during the daytime only at night and pregnant women need to sleep so do the babies so we do not really get to take showers here as often The bullying of the staff need to stop as I am going to the higher up to report the abuse that has been going on since i’ve lived here they will make false reports on you to the ministry they are very quick to judge do you not trust anybody here and keep to yourself as this is not ideal for many women especially social women like me there’s this one bald staff here who I’ve had nothing but an issue with And very quick to judge anybody The residents are OK however I have had issues with one and they did nothing but defend her even though she threatened to dropkick me and then the staff said they were going to call the police on me if I didn’t stop yelling at her after she threatened me and insulted me in the kitchen it’s so disgusting to have to be treated like this I will not tolerate it much longer

The shelter is quick to judge and gaslight everything. I was a sober pregnant mother to be and they made me think I would lose my kid all because of my mental health. The only people you can trust there is the medical staff. If u have mental health n good heart move out because the shelter will not support u No hot water Leave ur door unlocked when ur not home Open a support file if ur here! Your doctor and family will let u walk out with ur kid. Don’t forgot work on ur mental health and everything it takes to keep ur kid. I recommend to move out before ur kid is born They will make false allegations to ur case worker n mcfd. I’m one of the lucky ones
