How much do financial planners cost in Toronto?

Typical cost: Fee-only planners charge for advice (commonly $150 to $300 per hour or a flat plan fee, illustrative); commission-based advisors may have no direct fee. What moves the price: Fee-only versus commission-based advice, whether you want a one-time plan or ongoing management, and how complex your finances are.

A one-time, fee-only plan can be money well spent when weighing home care against a move, or deciding how to use home equity. Ask any advisor how they are compensated before you begin.

How to choose financial planners in Toronto

Toronto is a sprawling city, and that size works in your favour when finding a financial planner for an older parent or for yourself. The concentration of planners is highest downtown and in midtown neighbourhoods like Yonge and Eglinton, Forest Hill, and North York, but you'll find qualified practitioners in the inner suburbs, too. If your parent lives near a major hospital corridor, such as around Sunnybrook, Mount Sinai, or St. Michael's, there are often planners nearby who are used to working with clients managing health-related financial decisions, like funding home care or restructuring assets after a diagnosis.

Our strongest advice is to prioritize credentials and senior-specific experience over convenience of location. Look for a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, and ask directly whether the planner regularly works with clients in or approaching retirement. Toronto has a large pool of planners, which means you have real choice, but it also means that generalist planners with no particular focus on older adults are easy to stumble into. Fee-only or fee-for-service planners, who charge for their time rather than earning commissions on products, tend to give advice that's easier to trust on its face. The trade-off is that their upfront cost can feel higher than a commission-based planner, even though the long-term picture is often cleaner.

For families coordinating across a lot of moving parts, a financial planner who communicates well with other professionals matters enormously. In our experience, the best outcomes for Toronto seniors come when the financial planner is willing to work alongside an estate planning lawyer, an elder law specialist, or an insurance adviser. Senior Care Path lists all of those services in Toronto, so you can build that team from one place. If your parent is less mobile, ask about home visits or video appointments. Many Toronto planners have normalized remote meetings since 2020, and a planner who refuses any flexibility on that is a weaker fit for an older client.

Start with a brief introductory call before committing. Ask how many of their current clients are retired or semi-retired, and what their approach is to drawing down registered accounts. A planner who gives you a clear, unhurried answer to that second question is a planner worth staying on the line with.

  • A planner experienced with retirement income and funding care, ideally a CFP
  • Clarity on how they are paid (fee-only, commission, or both)
  • A written plan that models care costs against pensions, savings, and benefits

Frequently asked questions

Is financial planning covered by OHIP or any public program in Ontario?
No. Financial planning is private-pay in Ontario. There is no OHIP or provincial coverage. Fees vary by planner and service model, so ask upfront whether the planner charges by the hour, a flat project fee, or earns commissions on products they recommend.
How do I choose the right financial planner for my aging parent in Toronto?
Prioritize a CFP designation and direct experience with retirement-age clients. Ask how they handle registered account drawdowns and whether they co-ordinate with estate planning or elder law professionals. A willingness to offer home visits or video calls is a strong signal they're comfortable working with older adults.
How do I book an appointment or check availability for a Toronto financial planner?
Use the listings on this page to contact planners directly. Most Toronto planners offer a free or low-cost introductory call. Booking a phone consultation first, before committing to a full engagement, is the approach we recommend.
Should my parent see a financial planner before meeting with an estate planning lawyer?
Either order can work, but starting with a financial planner often clarifies the full picture of assets and income first. That information makes the estate planning conversation more productive. Both professionals are listed in Toronto on Senior Care Path if you want to build the team together.
Can a Toronto financial planner help if my parent is funding home care or a move to assisted living?
Yes, and it's one of the most valuable things they do. A planner experienced with older clients can model the cost of home care or a senior residence against existing savings, pensions, and government benefits. Pairing this with Senior Move Management advice can also help.
