How much do financial planners cost in Calgary?

Typical cost: Fee-only planners charge for advice (commonly $150 to $300 per hour or a flat plan fee, illustrative); commission-based advisors may have no direct fee. What moves the price: Fee-only versus commission-based advice, whether you want a one-time plan or ongoing management, and how complex your finances are.

A one-time, fee-only plan can be money well spent when weighing home care against a move, or deciding how to use home equity. Ask any advisor how they are compensated before you begin.

How to choose financial planners in Calgary

Calgary's senior population is spread across a wide geographic footprint, from established inner-city communities like Beltline and Inglewood to sprawling suburban areas in the northwest and southeast. That spread matters when you're helping a parent who no longer drives confidently, or who tires easily after appointments. Our advisors consistently recommend starting with planners who offer home visits or video consultations, because the most technically qualified planner in the world isn't helpful if getting there is exhausting. The trade-off is that home-visit availability can mean a longer wait to get an initial appointment, so book early.

Credentials matter enormously here. Look for a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation, and ideally one who has worked specifically with retirees or pre-retirees. Alberta's oil-and-gas economy means many Calgarians carry pension income, corporate shares, or severance structures that are genuinely different from what planners in other provinces routinely see. A planner with senior-specific experience in Calgary will understand how to integrate defined-benefit pension decisions with RRSPs and the transition to RRIFs, and how to account for the provincial tax picture. Ask directly: "What proportion of your clients are over 60, and have you worked with clients who have defined-benefit pensions?" If the answer is vague, keep looking.

Geography also shapes your shortlist in a practical way. Families whose parents live near Foothills Medical Centre or Rockyview General Hospital, or who are already accessing other health services in those catchment areas, often find it convenient to coordinate financial planning appointments in nearby areas of northwest or southwest Calgary. Planners located closer to those hubs are also more likely to have referral relationships with elder law and estate planning professionals, which is helpful because good retirement financial planning rarely happens in isolation. We list elder law and estate planning services in Calgary separately, and a planner who actively collaborates with those professionals is a stronger choice than one who works in a silo.

Our clear recommendation: prioritize senior-specific experience and a willingness to meet your parent where they are, physically or virtually, over the prestige of a downtown address. Downtown offices are accessible by transit and can work well for seniors who are mobile and comfortable with city travel, but for many older Calgarians that's simply not the case anymore. Choose the planner who comes to them, or meets them on video, and who can speak plainly about CPP timing, pension options, and estate coordination without using jargon.

  • A planner experienced with retirement income and funding care, ideally a CFP
  • Clarity on how they are paid (fee-only, commission, or both)
  • A written plan that models care costs against pensions, savings, and benefits

Frequently asked questions

Does Alberta provincial coverage or any public program pay for senior financial planning in Calgary?
No. Financial planning is private-pay in Alberta. There's no public coverage through provincial health plans. Fees vary by planner and service model, so ask upfront how the planner is compensated, whether by fee, commission, or a combination.
How do I choose a financial planner in Calgary for my aging parent?
Prioritize the CFP designation and direct experience with retirees. Ask about pension and RRIF expertise, since many Calgarians have defined-benefit pensions. Confirm they offer home visits or video appointments. A planner who collaborates with local estate planning and elder law professionals is a strong sign.
How do I check availability and book an initial appointment with a Calgary financial planner?
Use each planner's profile on this page to review their contact details and services. Call or email directly to ask about availability and whether they offer home or video visits. Booking a few weeks ahead is wise, especially for planners who see a high volume of senior clients.
My parent lives in the northwest near Foothills Medical Centre. Are there planners nearby?
Several planners serve northwest and southwest Calgary, areas close to major hospitals. Filter by location on this page, and ask any planner you contact whether they serve your parent's neighbourhood or offer home visits as an alternative.
Should financial planning be coordinated with estate planning or elder law services?
Yes, and we'd say it's one of the most important things to get right. A good financial planner won't replace an estate lawyer, but they should work alongside one. We list both estate planning and elder law professionals in Calgary separately on Senior Care Path.
