How much do occupational therapists cost in Ottawa?

Typical cost: $100–$200 per hour privately for assessments and home visits, sometimes covered by insurance or after a hospital stay. What moves the price: Assessment scope, travel for home visits, and whether equipment and follow-up are included.

OT assessments may be covered by private insurance, veterans' benefits, or hospital programs. Some provincial assistive-device programs help pay for recommended equipment when an OT prescribes it.

How to choose occupational therapists in Ottawa

Ottawa's senior population is spread across very different neighbourhoods, from the walkable streets of the Glebe and Old Ottawa South to the sprawling suburban communities of Barrhaven, Orleans, and Kanata. That geography matters when you're choosing an occupational therapist (OT) for an older parent. A clinic near The Ottawa Hospital or Bruyère is convenient for families in the city's core, but if your parent lives in the east end or the west suburbs, a therapist who does home visits is almost always the better call. Home visits let the OT see the actual space, the actual stairs, the actual bathroom. A clinic assessment is useful, but it asks your parent to perform in an unfamiliar room, and the recommendations can miss what a home visit catches immediately.

Our strong recommendation: prioritize OTs who offer in-home assessments, especially if your parent is living independently and the goal is preventing a fall or planning for aging in place. Yes, home visits can mean a longer wait for an initial appointment than walking into a clinic. That trade-off is worth accepting. The insights from a home environment assessment, including recommendations for grab bars, ramp access, kitchen modifications, or adaptive equipment, are far more actionable than a generic report written from a clinic chair.

When you review profiles, look for OTs who list geriatrics, aging in place, or home modification as a focus area. General OT training is solid, but senior-specific experience means the therapist already knows the common challenges, from post-stroke recovery to cognitive changes that affect daily safety. Ask whether they coordinate with other services your parent may already use, such as physiotherapy for mobility or podiatry and foot care for balance concerns. Connecting those dots early saves your family a lot of back-and-forth later. If legal or financial decisions are coming, an OT's capacity assessment can also support elder law or estate planning conversations.

Ottawa also has a mix of publicly funded and private OT services. Hospital-based OT through The Ottawa Hospital or Bruyère is available to eligible patients but typically follows a referral and may involve a waitlist. Private OTs can often be reached more quickly and can work independently of a hospital episode. Many private insurers and employee benefit plans cover OT; check your parent's coverage before assuming it's fully out of pocket.

  • A registered occupational therapist (OT) experienced with seniors and home safety
  • A home assessment with specific, prioritized recommendations
  • Help sourcing and funding any recommended equipment

Frequently asked questions

Is occupational therapy covered by OHIP or insurance in Ottawa?
OHIP does not cover private OT, but hospital-based OT for eligible patients may be publicly funded. Many private benefit plans and insurers do cover OT fees. Check your parent's plan first, then ask the therapist's office about direct billing options.
How do I choose the right occupational therapist for my elderly parent in Ottawa?
Look for an OT with specific experience in geriatrics or aging in place, and confirm they offer home visits. Ottawa's spread-out geography makes in-home assessments especially valuable. Coordination with services like physiotherapy or podiatry is a good sign of a well-rounded practice.
How do I book an occupational therapist in Ottawa and check their availability?
Use the directory listings on this page to contact OTs directly. Many accept self-referrals, so you don't always need a doctor's note. Ask about their current wait times and whether they serve your parent's neighbourhood or will travel for a home visit.
When should I consider a home visit versus a clinic assessment?
Choose a home visit when fall prevention, aging in place, or home modification is the goal. A clinic visit works well for focused functional assessments post-surgery or post-stroke. In our experience, home visits produce more practical, specific recommendations for older adults living independently.
Can an Ottawa OT provide a capacity assessment for legal or financial planning?
Yes. Registered OTs in Ontario can conduct formal capacity assessments. These are often used alongside elder law or estate planning processes. Confirm the OT is registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and has experience with capacity evaluations.
