Senior Care Path Summary
Opto-Mization is an optometry and vision therapy clinic serving patients of all ages in Victoria and Nanaimo. The practice offers comprehensive eye exams that assess functional vision, not just clarity, identifying how well the eyes work together and coordinate with the brain. This is particularly relevant for seniors experiencing balance issues, dizziness, vertigo, or migraines related to visual dysfunction.
The clinic specializes in neuro-optometric rehabilitation, a branch of optometry focused on the connection between vision and brain function. Seniors recovering from stroke or managing post-stroke vision problems, as well as those with age-related balance disorders or vestibular dysfunction, may benefit from personalized vision therapy tailored to their recovery needs. The practice also provides specialized glasses prescriptions designed to optimize the connection between eyes and brain.
With 11 years of clinical experience and over 300 five-star reviews, the practice emphasizes how proper prescriptions and vision therapy can reduce headaches, improve balance, and enhance daily function. The clinic works directly with insurance providers and does not require referrals for initial appointments. Vision therapy programs typically range from 6 weeks to 10 months depending on individual goals.

Everything about my visit was relaxed and very helpful. From the inital tests, and further tests, to the fitting of my glasses. Dr 'Cam''s enthusiasm and thoroughness is impressive. He clearly explained how he could help me and answered all my questions without hesitation. He comes across as being very passionate about his field of expertise and clearly enjoys his work. This is very reassuring to me as a patient, with some very specific requirements for my prescription, that he was able to provide. Of course my final opinion will be when I get to try my new glasses. I first met with Dr. McCrodan in 2021 after a concussion from an MVA. Having sat in the dark in a quiet room for almost 6 months by that point (brutal dizziness/nausea when ever I moved) when I got referred to Dr. McCrodan and he said "I can help you!" It was like a lifeline for a drowning person at the end of a rope. The staff have all been amazing and I did go through the vision therapy program (with both Sarah and Casey) and found it very helpful. Casey is exceptional at his job and I could really see my progress over the months he spent with me with weekly vision therapy sessions. Dr. McCrodan really does do the best he can to help patients get back to their best. Fantastic in person skills, great at explaining. Has developed a program which makes a tremendous difference to those who are fortunate enough to be referred/followed by him. Thanks for being so awesome. Megan was also incredibly exceptional in dealing with ICBC and whatever paperwork/billing/coverage required. Thank you Megan! You too rock!

I first visited Opto-Mization on April 29th of 2025. For me, it was a gamble—I had already tried everything except a combination of prism lenses and vision therapy (VT). I wore Neurolens, other prism lenses from renowned specialists, and even tried VT separately, but nothing ever gave me satisfaction. Living with binocular vision dysfunction (BVD) often feels hopeless, because a person struggling with it never realizes the problem comes from their eyes. The symptoms never “blame the eyes.” Instead, it feels like you’re stressed, overwhelmed, or even weak, which eventually turns into psychological struggles in front of society. Looking back, I never imagined it would take this long to identify something that was actually treatable. The lack of understanding led me down the wrong paths and into a life of lower quality. No one really listened when I tried to explain that there was something wrong with my eyes. Eye specialists would check for clarity alone and write me off as “normal.” But clarity is just 1 of 17 different ways of testing and understanding the eyes. I never gave up hope in myself, even when the world seemed to give up on me. I kept researching, hoping that someone would finally help me out of this endless pain. Because of my vision, I could never read very well or write efficiently. I constantly traced back, reread paragraphs without understanding, and ended up looking like the “dumb” student. I couldn’t maintain eye contact, couldn’t express myself clearly, and my decision-making was impaired. My confidence dropped lower each day. So, when I walked into Opto-Mization, I was skeptical. This was supposed to be my last attempt—everything else had failed. At the very least, I thought, someone should finally hear my story of struggling for 11 long years. I was taken through several different tests that I had never done before. When the results came, I sat with Dr. McCrodan, who told me my eyes were misaligned and that I would need two pairs of glasses—one for distance and one for reading. Even then, I wasn’t convinced this would work. I had to wait three more weeks to finally get the lenses. I wore them for another three weeks, but the symptoms didn’t change much. That’s when I decided to try VT along with the glasses. I started sessions with Challyene. At first, it was hard—I felt like quitting because the therapy required time, effort, and discipline to practice at home. But something in me pushed me to keep going. After about three weeks of VT, I noticed changes I never expected. From that point on, I gave it my all, doing every exercise consistently without missing a single day. In just three months, my eyes were in a completely different place from where they had started. This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without Challyene and Dr. McCrodan. My eyes are not completely “back to normal,” but the difference is incredible. I can now read, write, sit in front of a book, listen to people, socialize, communicate more effectively, and live with less dizziness, fewer headaches, and much more focus. Now I understand—those other reviews I read were not exaggerating. Victoria will always hold a special place in my heart as the city that transformed me back into my confident younger self, who should have had a better chance years ago. Coming out of darkness is something not everyone can understand—but I am living it now. I am finally seeing light. Opto-Mization has helped me come back to life and reminded me that I am not alone anymore. That assurance alone is enough to move forward with hope. Thank you to the entire team for helping me reach this place—especially to Dr. McCrodan, who is doing an amazing job changing lives for the better.
