About This Community

Emily's House is Toronto's only hospice for children and families facing life-threatening illnesses. It provides palliative care, medical respite support, and family-centred services for children with life-limiting conditions.

Senior Care Path Summary

Emily's House provides a family-friendly haven and temporary home for children and families requiring end-of-life palliative care and/or medical respite supports.

The paediatric hospice aims to improve quality of life in circumstances of advanced complex illness, disease and disability.

The facility accommodates a maximum of 10 children at a time and is located at 45 Jack Layton Way in the Riverdale neighbourhood of Toronto, adjacent to an accessible public park.

Services include 24/7 clinical nursing, symptom management, perinatal care (IMPACT program), therapeutic programming and recreation, legacy and memory making, grief and bereavement support, spiritual care, music therapy, and social work.

Children receiving standard respite can stay up to 28 nights per year. The team includes medical staff, nurses, child life therapists, and specialized volunteers trained to provide compassionate end-of-life care.

Approximately 50–60% of funding comes from government, with the remainder from private donations and fundraising. Services are provided at no cost to families, though families provide their child's medications, diapers, and special food items for standard respite stays.

Emily's House relies on referrals from physicians, nurses, social workers, and families.

It's been almost one year since our stay at Emily's House. The people here are absolutely fantastic. We had no idea that such a wonderful place existed. Our daughter Moa lived most of her short life at Sick Kids where we also received exceptionally compassionate care. But it was such a godsend to be able to spend our last few days with her in a non-clinical environment. Aside from the hospital, Emily's House is the only home our Moa has ever known. We had the chance to be a happy family and make some cherished memories. For a preciously brief time, we almost forgot why we were there. Staff were unbelievably compassionate and accommodating. They welcomed us into the home and all of the programs/activities going on. They let us be when we wanted to have private family time. And when our daughter needed care they came running. And when the time finally arrived to say farewell to our daughter, we felt so supported and cared for. The after-care is equally top notch. Even now, we still receive thinking-of-you cards and info on support programs. This is all thanks to the amazing folks at EH and PAC, the social workers, Sick Kids NICU and Pathways Grief Support team. An absolutely All-star lineup. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Our experience with Emily’s Home was truly exceptional. Every member of the team went above and beyond to ensure our child was cared for with dignity, comfort, and warmth. The staff showed incredible patience and understanding, offering support not only to our child but to our entire family. Their compassion made an unimaginable time a bit more bearable, and we will always be grateful for the gentle, thoughtful care they provided. Emily’s House is a place filled with genuine kindness and extraordinary dedication. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️

My son has been spending a lot of time at Emily's House as I recover from surgery. They are absolutely incredible! My son adores getting to spend time there and interact with the staff and other patients. They have taken time to get to know him and his likes and dislikes and cater to them. Families having to utilize Emily's House are going through a horrible situation, know that their child has a life limiting disease and are generally considered terminally ill, and the staff and volunteers help negate a little bit of the stress for the entire family. I could not be more grateful for everything they've done for myself and my child.
