Senior Care PathCosts & Funding

Eavestrough cleaning (gutter cleaning) in Ontario costs about $150 to $350 a visit in 2026 for most homes: about $150 to $175 for a bungalow and $185 to $300 for a two-storey detached home in Toronto, and about $150 to $250 for a bungalow and $200 to $350 for a two-storey home in Ottawa, based on published local price guides. Most homes need it twice a year, in late spring and late fall.

For a family, the price is the easy part. The hard part is getting a parent who has always done this job to hand it off, then making sure it gets done without anyone checking from a ladder. This guide covers what it costs, how to set it up and manage it (even from another city), how to keep a parent safe from door-to-door pitches, and what to say when they insist on doing it themselves.

What moves the price: the number of storeys (taller ladder work is slower), the total length of eavestrough, a steep or complicated roof, how much debris has built up, and blocked downspouts.

What's included in a gutter cleaning?

A standard visit clears the debris from the troughs, flushes the downspouts and does a basic check of the system. Downspout flushing is where quotes differ. One Toronto guide includes it in every package; the Ottawa guide says it's usually included but to confirm it, because a clean trough with a blocked downspout still overflows.

Ask the crew to tell you about anything they notice while they're up there: loose brackets, leaking joints, or a section pulling away from the fascia. They're the only ones who will see it.

Our take: Ask for before and after photos. Your parent can't check the work from the ground, and neither can you if you live across town. A crew that's proud of its work sends them without being asked.

How often should eavestroughs be cleaned, and when?

Twice a year suits most Ontario homes: once in late spring and once in late fall after the leaves drop. Homes under mature trees may need the fall cleaning split into two visits.

Timing matters most in the fall. The Ottawa guide points to late October into early November as the best window, because once temperatures drop below freezing, the debris ices over and the job gets much harder. Blocked eavestroughs in winter also overflow onto walkways, where the water refreezes as ice right where your parent walks.

Why shouldn't an older parent clean their own eavestroughs?

Because a ladder is the riskiest place an older adult can stand. Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors in Canada, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, and a fall from a ladder onto a driveway is a different injury from a slip in the hallway.

Ground-level tools exist: telescopic wands and pressure washer attachments that reach a single-storey eavestrough from the ground. They're fine for a fit 60-year-old with a bungalow. For a parent in their late 70s or 80s, they still mean dragging a heavy tool around the house, and they do nothing for a two-storey home.

Our take: At $150 to $350 a visit, this is one of the cheapest ways to prevent a serious fall. If your parent resists, book it as a gift and pay the first year yourself.

What do you say to a parent who insists on doing it themselves?

Ask, don't tell. "Would you let me book the eavestroughs this year so you don't have to haul the ladder out?" lands better than "You shouldn't be on a ladder anymore." Most parents aren't attached to the job. They're attached to not needing help.

Let them stay in charge of the parts that matter to them: choosing the company, being home to meet the crew, approving the quote. Hand off the climbing, not the decision. And if they've had a dizzy spell, a fall or a new medication this year, say so plainly. That's the conversation worth having.

How can a family manage eavestrough cleaning for a parent?

Set it up once and it runs itself:

  • Book a standing spring and fall cleaning with one company, renewed each year, so nobody has to remember.
  • Put your name and number on the booking as well as your parent's, so you hear about missed visits or repairs first.
  • Ask for photos after every visit, sent to you. It's the only way to check the work without a ladder.
  • Pay by card or e-transfer from your account or theirs, so your parent never handles cash with a crew at the door.
  • Tell your parent the company name and the date. The crew works outside, so your parent doesn't need to be home, but they shouldn't be surprised by a ladder at the window.

If you live in another city, ask a neighbour to glance at the eavestroughs after a big storm, and keep the company's number on your parent's fridge.

How do you protect a parent from door-to-door eavestrough pitches?

Crews knock on doors every fall offering a "quick cleaning" or warning that the eavestroughs "need replacing today". Some are honest. Some aren't, and older homeowners are the people they look for.

Agree on one simple rule with your parent: they never sign or pay at the door, they take a card and call you. A good company is happy to wait a day.

If your parent has already signed, there's still a way out. In Ontario, you can cancel most contracts over $50 signed at your door or in your home within 10 days of getting a written copy, without giving a reason, according to Ontario's consumer protection rules.

Our take: A replacement quote handed over at the door is the moment to pause. Get a second opinion from the company that already cleans the eavestroughs, and you'll usually find a repair does the job.

Are gutter guards worth it for a parent's home?

Sometimes. Guards cut down on cleanings, but they're not a reason to stop checking the eavestroughs, so ask any installer what upkeep their guards still need.

One 2026 Toronto price guide from DT Cleaning lists installed aluminum guards at about $7 to $9+ per foot, or about $1,400 to $1,800 for a home with 200 feet of eavestrough.

Guards make the most sense for a parent planning to stay in the home for years, on a lot with heavy tree cover. If a move is likely in the next few years, two cleanings a year cost far less.

What does a premium, hands-off arrangement look like?

At the upper end, families stop thinking about the eavestroughs at all:

  • A standing spring and fall booking that renews each year, with photos after every visit.
  • A crew that also handles windows, the roofline and minor eavestrough repairs on the same visit.
  • Gutter guards installed with a long warranty, plus an annual inspection.
  • One company for the whole property: eavestroughs in spring and fall, lawn care in summer and snow removal in winter, with one contact who knows the house.
  • Large and estate homes in Toronto run $350 to $500+ a cleaning, according to the Toronto guide above.
Our take: The premium is worth it when your parent lives alone in a large, tall or heavily treed home, or when you live far away. For a bungalow with no trees overhead, a reliable twice-a-year booking is all you need.

How do you find a reliable eavestrough cleaner for a parent?

  1. Get two or three quotes for the same scope: troughs, downspout flush and a system check.
  2. Confirm liability insurance, and that the crew, not your parent, carries the ladder risk.
  3. Ask for photos and a note of any repairs needed.
  4. Book the same company twice a year so they get to know the house.

Frequently asked questions

How much does eavestrough cleaning cost in Toronto?

About $150 to $175 for a bungalow, $175 to $275 for a two-storey semi-detached, $185 to $300 for a two-storey detached and $350 to $500+ for an estate home in 2026, according to a published Toronto price guide, or about $1.00 to $2.50 per linear foot, before HST.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Ottawa?

About $150 to $250 for a standard bungalow, $200 to $350 for a two-storey home and $300 to $450 for a large two-storey in 2026, according to an Ottawa cost guide reviewed in September 2026. Complex rooflines are quoted individually.

How often should eavestroughs be cleaned?

Twice a year for most Ontario homes, in late spring and late fall after the leaves drop. Homes under mature trees may need a second fall visit. Book the fall cleaning before the first freeze.

Does eavestrough cleaning include the downspouts?

Usually, but confirm it in the quote. A clean eavestrough with a blocked downspout still overflows, and in winter that water can freeze on the walkway.

Does my parent need to be home for eavestrough cleaning?

No. The crew works outside. Tell your parent the company name and date so they aren't surprised, put your number on the booking, and ask for photos after the visit so you can check the work.

Can you cancel an eavestrough contract signed at the door in Ontario?

Usually, yes. Ontario lets you cancel most contracts over $50 signed at your door or in your home within 10 days of getting a written copy, without a reason. The simplest rule for a parent is to never sign or pay at the door.

Should seniors clean their own gutters?

We don't recommend it. Falls are the leading cause of injury among seniors in Canada, and ladder work is the riskiest kind. A professional cleaning costs about $150 to $350 a visit. You can find eavestrough cleaning help on Senior Care Path.
