Meals on Wheels in Ontario delivers a hot lunch or a week of frozen meals to a parent's door, run by local non-profits. In November 2026, a hot meal costs about $7.50 to $11 and a frozen meal about $6 to $10, depending on the program, and in most cities you can sign your parent up yourself, without a referral.

Usually it starts with a fridge. You open it on a visit and it's empty, or full of food that went off last week. Your parent says they're eating fine. Meanwhile you're at work two cities away, wondering whether they had lunch.

A daily hot meal fixes more than lunch. A volunteer at the door every weekday is also a friendly check-in, so ask the program what it does if nobody answers.

Do this next:

  1. Find your parent's program in the city sections below and call it, or use its online form.
  2. Not sure who serves your parent's street? Call Ontario Health atHome at 1-833-515-1234, seven days a week, and ask for meal programs near them.
  3. If meals are one sign of bigger needs, compare home care services in Ontario, which can add meal preparation to visits.

How does Meals on Wheels work in Ontario?

Each city has its own program, run by a local non-profit such as VON, the Red Cross or a community support agency. There isn't one provincial service. The province's guide to programs for seniors describes Meals on Wheels as delivering "nutritious and affordable meals" to seniors, people with disabilities and people recovering from illness or surgery, and notes "you may have to pay a fee."

Most programs offer two things:

  • Hot meals: delivered by volunteers around lunchtime, usually Monday to Friday, with soup, an entrée and dessert.
  • Frozen meals: a week's worth delivered once or twice a week, for dinners and weekends.

Few programs deliver at dinnertime or on weekends, so ask about the gaps. Most can handle special diets, such as diabetic, low-salt or texture-modified meals.

How much does Meals on Wheels cost?

Families pay per meal. As listed on each program's site in November 2026:

CityProgramHot mealFrozen meal
Toronto (midtown)SPRINT Senior Care$7.75$6.65 entrée
Toronto (north)Meals on Wheels and More$9.59$6.95 entrée
Toronto (northeast)Senior Persons Living Connected$10.75$48 package
Ottawa (central)Meals on Wheels Ottawa$8.85$8.25 to $9.65 entrée
BramptonBrampton Meals on Wheels$7.50$40 for 7 entrées
MississaugaVON Peel$8.40$41.10 for 7
OakvilleOakville Meals on Wheels$9.95$52 for 7 entrées
HamiltonVON Hamilton$8.00Call for price
Guelph and WellingtonVON$9.00$7.00 entrée

Some programs offer a reduced rate when money is tight. Oakville does, with last year's Notice of Assessment, and Kitchener-Waterloo sets fees by income. Veterans may have meals covered under Veterans Affairs' Veterans Independence Program if it's preapproved.

Meals aren't a claimable medical expense. They're not on the CRA's list of eligible medical expenses, and they're not among the expenses for the Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit.

Our take: at $8 to $10 a day, a weekday hot meal is one of the cheapest, most useful supports you can arrange for a parent who lives alone. Start with three days a week and a box of frozen meals for the rest; it's easy to add days later.

Who qualifies for Meals on Wheels?

Most programs take seniors who find it hard to shop or cook, adults with a disability or chronic illness, and anyone recovering from surgery or illness. Age floors vary: some say 55, 60 or 65, and some have none. What matters most is the service area, which is set by postal code or street boundaries, especially in Toronto and Ottawa.

In most cities you don't need a doctor's referral. Brampton says plainly, "No referral is necessary," and VON Peel, Oakville, Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo take family sign-ups too.

Meals on Wheels in Toronto

Toronto has several programs, each covering its own neighbourhoods. If you call one that doesn't serve your parent's street, it will usually refer you on.

  • SPRINT Senior Care (midtown, roughly Bathurst to Bayview and the 401 to Bloor): hot and frozen meals, delivered seven days a week, every day of the year. Call 416-481-6411.
  • Meals on Wheels and More (north Toronto): hot meals seven days a week, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., hot Chinese meals on weekdays, and frozen meals on Wednesdays. Call 416-225-6041.
  • Senior Persons Living Connected (Scarborough and north York, for people 55 and older between Bayview and Markham Road, Lawrence to Denison): hot meals on weekdays and frozen meals on Fridays. Call 416-493-3333 ext. 806.

Meals on Wheels in Ottawa

Meals on Wheels Ottawa serves central Ottawa: hot meals Monday to Saturday over the noon hour, and frozen meals delivered Tuesdays west of the canal and Fridays east of it (4 to 28 meals per delivery). Volunteers deliver, so there's no delivery fee. It serves people 60 and older and adults with health needs. You or a family member can fill in the online application, or call 613-233-2424.

Outside the centre, other agencies cover the suburbs: the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre (Orléans, Gloucester, Cumberland), the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (Kanata, Nepean, Goulbourn), Rural Ottawa South Support Services, and Jewish Family Services for kosher meals.

Meals on Wheels in Mississauga and Brampton

  • Mississauga: VON Peel serves Mississauga (except Malton), Oakville and south Etobicoke, with hot meals on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and frozen meals on Mondays and Thursdays. Sign up through its Caredove page or call 905-821-3254.
  • Brampton: Brampton Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals on weekdays (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at least two meals a week, 24 hours' notice) and frozen meals on Fridays. Call 905-453-4140 ext. 3720. It doesn't take credit or debit cards.

Meals on Wheels in Oakville and Burlington

  • Oakville: Oakville Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals on weekdays and frozen meals on Wednesdays, with no dinner or weekend delivery. New clients start with a 10-meal trial ($99.50) and usually begin within two business days. Call 905-842-1411.
  • Burlington: the Canadian Red Cross Burlington branch runs the program. Its prices weren't available when we checked, so call the branch through the Red Cross Meals on Wheels page.

Meals on Wheels in Hamilton

VON Hamilton delivers hot meals on weekdays between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., at $8.00 a meal, plus frozen meals. Call 905-522-1022 to ask about eligibility and frozen-meal prices.

Meals on Wheels in Kitchener-Waterloo, Durham, Guelph and Barrie

  • Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge: Community Support Connections delivers hot meals on weekdays (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and frozen meals in bulk, with seven fee levels based on income. Call 519-772-8787 to book an intake.

  • Guelph and Wellington County: VON lists hot meals at $9.00 on weekdays around lunch and frozen entrées at $7.00. Call 519-323-2330 ext. 2.
  • Barrie and Simcoe Muskoka: the Canadian Red Cross Simcoe Muskoka branch runs the program, and prices vary. Call 705-721-3313.

Meals on Wheels in London

Meals on Wheels London runs the city's program, and VON Middlesex-Elgin serves the surrounding county. We couldn't check London's current prices on its site, so call or visit mowl.ca before you plan the budget. The London Middlesex Community Support Services Network can also point you to the right service.

What if there's no program near your parent, or they need dinners and weekends?

Private frozen-meal services fill the gaps. Heart to Home Meals, for example, delivers across Ontario with free delivery where it has a local outlet; entrées were about $9.90 to $13.90 in November 2026. You can order online or by phone on your parent's behalf, so it works well when you live far away.

Other options: a grocery delivery order you set up from your phone, a home care worker who cooks during a visit, or a retirement home's meal plan if cooking is one of several things your parent is struggling with.

How do you set it up from a distance?

  1. Call the program with your parent's address, any diet needs, allergies and the days you want.
  2. Ask to be the contact they call if your parent doesn't answer the door.
  3. Set up payment in your name if you can, by monthly invoice or pre-authorized payment.
  4. Tell your parent the volunteer's name and time, so a knock at noon isn't a surprise.
  5. Check in after two weeks: are the meals being eaten, or stacking up in the fridge?

If they're stacking up, that's useful information too. It may be time to talk about more help at home.
