  I reached out to Just Like Home Family Care with high hopes after detailed initial conversations with one of the owners, Sue. She arranged a very thorough home assessment at my mom’s house with Skip, who was assigned as her companion. We set up weekly 4-hour visits at $40/hour (+ tax). Skip mentioned having experience in food handling, massage therapy, and gardening, and there were certainly positive moments—like taking my mom to a garden center to get balcony plants set up, which I really appreciated. However, the overall service and communication fell short over time: Inappropriate Advice: During a period when my mother was dealing with a serious leg wound under the active care of doctors, a nurse practitioner, and Saint Elizabeth nurses, Skip offered unsolicited medical advice. She told my mother to put honey on it—contradicting the explicit treatment plan set by medical professionals, and without even specifying medicinal-grade Manuka honey. Care Notes & Communication: Getting care notes was a constant struggle, requiring multiple follow-ups. When they were finally provided, they were a few lines of information and what I felt was quite limited in detail about my mother’s wellbeing or day. Repeated attempts to address this directly with ownership went unanswered. Unfulfilled Promises: Skip mentioned having food handling experience and suggested tackling my mother’s fridge and freezer together, which my mother explicitly asked to focus on during a visit. However, when I later moved my mother, it became evident that this was not done. If the fridge and freezer had been sorted, they neglected to toss expired items and also left the inside of the shelves sticky and dirty. I understand companions only do 'light housekeeping /chores' and if this was too big of a job it should have been noted rather than left for me to do later. Billing & Account Oversight: While they did eventually reimburse a double-payment issue, it took several emails, texts and a phone call to the other owner for that to happen. I attempted to reach out to give them an opportunity to discuss these issues before leaving a review, and spoke with Juliette who seemed genuinely concerned. While the companion service had real promise at the beginning, the overstepping of boundaries, lack of management responsiveness, limited reporting and unfulfilled commitments make it hard to fully recommend.

  I spoke with Sue from Just Like Home and initially had a very encouraging and positive conversation regarding setting up care services for my elderly father. Sue was kind, helpful, and gave me the impression that they would be moving forward with the process. After our initial conversation, I was told there would be follow-up communication to arrange an interview/appointment, provide access to a portal, and send the necessary paperwork. Unfortunately, none of that ever happened. I followed up myself and was reassured that they were still working on moving forward with my father’s care. I even expressed that if they were unable to accommodate him, I would completely understand and simply asked to be informed so I could pursue alternative arrangements. Again, I was reassured that the process was still underway. It has now been over a month since the initial contact, and there has been no further communication, no paperwork, and no follow-through. During this time, my father has gone without care while I have essentially been left trying to chase down answers. I completely understand that not every company can accommodate every client, and I would have appreciated honesty and transparency if that had been the case. However, when communication indicates that something will be moving forward and there is no follow-through or explanation, it leaves a very poor impression. To be fair, my initial interaction with Sue was pleasant and encouraging. However, at this point, I am disappointed and frustrated by the lack of clear communication and follow-through.

  Just Like Home has provided my mom with excellent support during a season when she was not managing well on her own. She had been thinking of moving in with us, but with the support of the excellent worker provided, she has been able to regain her confidence and stay in her own place. The same worker came each time, was dependable, friendly and efficient. Couldn’t ask for anyone better. Definitely recommend to others! Valerie
