I would like to express my displeasure regarding how Rodica House handled my son-in-law’s mother’s eviction. At the same time, I want to be very clear that the care and treatment she received during her stay were done with great kindness and compassion. The residents at Rodica House are in excellent hands, and for that we are truly grateful. My concerns relate specifically to the manner in which the eviction was communicated and handled. My story begins on the day I went to pick up a few items for my son-in-law’s mother, whom I will refer to as Elle. The staff member on duty that day was Kristina. Normally, when I arrive, Kristina comes downstairs and chats with me. However, this time she behaved differently. She went onto the wraparound balcony and unlocked Elle’s bedroom from the sliding door upstairs. She then came down the stairs, briefly told me she had opened the bedroom door, and disappeared. I quickly gathered what I needed, locked the bedroom, and headed out. As I was walking to my vehicle, Kristina called down to me from the balcony to inform me that Elle would no longer be a resident of Rodica House. I kindly asked if she could come downstairs so we could speak privately inside. When I returned to the foyer, she met me and informed me that Maria was on speakerphone. Kristina explained the reason for the eviction. I was not surprised and was fully in agreement with the decision. I even hugged her and thanked her and the other staff members for everything they had done for Elle. During this entire interaction, however, her demeanor felt distant and unresponsive, and she did not reciprocate the hug. I informed her that I would return the following day to collect Elle’s belongings, as this conversation took place around 3:00 p.m. Later that same evening, my husband and I decided it would make more sense to retrieve Elle’s belongings right away since she would not be returning. When we arrived, I saw Kristina upstairs in the window. I smiled and waved but received no response. We entered the house with bins and boxes and proceeded to Elle’s room. Again, Kristina did not meet us downstairs but instead went onto the wraparound balcony to unlock the sliding door to Elle’s bedroom. She then entered through the adjoining bedroom and approached us. She stated that it was late. I checked my phone and it was 7:15 p.m. She expressed concern that removing belongings at that time might disturb the other residents and suggested that I had until the end of the month to collect everything. I responded that it was only 7:15 p.m. and continued packing. We completed the process in less than 25 minutes, and there appeared to be no disruption to the residents. After we finished, Kristina informed me that I needed to take Elle’s medications. She was again on the phone with Maria at that time. As I left, I once more thanked her for everything they had done and acknowledged that we understood why this decision had been made. She simply smiled and told me to return at the end of the month to collect the deposit. I must say that the overall interaction felt unprofessional, awkward, and uncomfortable. While I fully respected and agreed with the decision regarding Elle’s residency, I believe the situation could have been handled with more courtesy and direct communication. Given that Elle was no longer returning, I felt it was reasonable to remove her belongings promptly and store them in a place that was more accessible to our family. Again, I sincerely appreciate the care and kindness shown to Elle during her time at Rodica House. My intention in writing this is not to diminish the quality of care provided, but rather to share my experience in hopes that future interactions that Kristina will have with other future families of residents, especially during difficult transitions, may be handled with greater professionalism and sensitivity.
