Aging in Place: The Complete Home Safety Checklist
A room-by-room checklist to make a home safer so seniors can stay independent for longer.
Why it matters
Most seniors want to stay in their own homes — and most can, safely, with the right modifications. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older Canadians, and the majority are preventable.
Entryways & stairs
- Install handrails on both sides of every staircase
- Add non-slip strips to steps
- Ensure bright, even lighting and reachable switches
Bathroom
- Install grab bars by the toilet and in the shower
- Use a non-slip mat and consider a shower chair
- Set the water heater to 49°C / 120°F to prevent scalds
Kitchen
- Keep everyday items within easy reach
- Use an automatic shut-off kettle and stove timers
- Improve task lighting over counters
Bedroom & living areas
- Remove loose rugs and clutter from walkways
- Keep a lamp and phone within reach of the bed
- Add nightlights along the path to the bathroom
