Long-term care, home care agencies and apartment buildings without services aren't included.

Who runs Calgary's retirement homes?

A mix, and it's worth knowing who's who. Silvera for Seniors, a Calgary non-profit that has provided housing with services for independent older adults since 1962, runs a dozen communities in our directory, more than any other operator. Alberta-based groups like United Active Living and The Manor Village each run several more, alongside national operators.

Non-profit homes like Silvera's often cost less and can have waitlists. Private homes usually offer more amenities and faster move-ins. Neither is better by default. It depends on your parent's budget and how soon they need to move.

What does a supportive living licence mean in Calgary?

In Alberta, homes that provide hands-on help are licensed as supportive living, and they must meet the province's continuing care standards. Ask each home whether it holds that licence and at what level. It tells you how much care your parent can receive without moving.

Publicly subsidized designated supportive living is a separate route. It's arranged through an assessment that starts with a call to 811, not through the residence.

How much do retirement homes cost in Calgary?
