There's no residential hospice in Mississauga or Brampton yet. Hospice Mississauga is building a 12-suite residence on Speakman Drive, with first residents expected in late 2027, and Brampton's planned 12-bed residence, by Kay Blair Hospice, is in its funding phase. Until then, Peel families use residences nearby, such as Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke, and Hospice Mississauga's free community programs at home.

That gap matters if your parent is in Peel and someone has just raised hospice. You may need to look a little further for a bed, and lean harder on support at home. The good news: the community programs are free, and their staff know the nearby beds well.

Do this next:

  • Ask your parent's doctor or palliative team for a hospice referral now; it takes time, and the closest beds are outside Peel.
  • Call Hospice Mississauga's 24/7 Hospice Palliative Helpline at 905-667-1865 for advice, any time.
  • Plan for nights at home: our palliative care at home guide explains funded and private help.

What does Hospice Mississauga offer now?

Hospice Mississauga (formerly Heart House Hospice) runs community programs at no cost to families: counselling, grief and bereavement support, social connection programs, wellness, spiritual care, volunteers, and HUUG for grieving children and youth. Its referral page lets you request help for yourself or someone you know. Call (905) 712-8119, or the 24/7 Hospice Palliative Helpline at 905-667-1865.

How do you get a hospice bed if you live in Peel?

  1. Ask for a referral early. Dorothy Ley requires a doctor's referral for its residence; most hospices also work through Ontario Health atHome.
  2. Name more than one hospice. With no residence in Peel yet, ask the palliative team which nearby residences take Peel patients and how long each wait is.
  3. Strengthen care at home meanwhile. Ontario Health atHome funds palliative nursing and some personal support; a private agency can add overnight shifts, roughly $28 to $40 an hour for personal support in 2026.
Our take: don't wait for the new residences. Ask for the referral and the community support now, and plan for care at home in the meantime; when the Speakman Drive residence opens, you'll already be known to the team.

What should you ask a hospice?

  • Do you take patients from Mississauga or Brampton, and how long is the wait?
  • What are your admission criteria?
  • Can family visit at any hour, or stay overnight?
  • Are there any costs, such as medications or transport?
