Old Age Security Now Covers Less Than a Fifth of a Typical Ontario Retirement Home Rent
Even after this fall's 1.4% increase, the maximum OAS pension of $762.50 a month pays about 19% of the median advertised starting rent at an Ontario retirement home. Senior Care Path on the gap families need to plan for.

The October increase, in context
Old Age Security rose 1.4% for October to December 2026. The maximum pension is now $762.50 a month at ages 65 to 74 and $838.75 at 75 and over, starting with the October 28 payment, according to Canada.ca.
Set that against what retirement living costs. Among Ontario retirement, independent and assisted living residences that publish a starting price on Senior Care Path, the median is $4,041 a month (111 prices, October 2026). The maximum OAS pension covers about 19% of it.
Add CPP and the gap is still most of the bill
Most retirees also draw the Canada Pension Plan. The average new CPP retirement pension at 65 was $858.34 a month in July 2026, according to Canada.ca. Together with the maximum OAS, that's $1,620.84, about 40% of the Ontario median starting rent.
| Monthly amount | Share of $4,041 Ontario median | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum OAS, ages 65 to 74 | $762.50 | 19% |
| Maximum OAS, 75 and over | $838.75 | 21% |
| Maximum OAS + average new CPP at 65 | $1,620.84 | 40% |
And the starting rent is the floor, not the bill. It's usually the smallest suite with no care added. Care packages commonly add $1,000 to $3,000 a month as needs grow.
Where the province changes the math
The same OAS cheque stretches very differently by province. Median advertised starting prices in our directory are about $4,020 in Alberta, $3,902 in British Columbia and $1,948 in Quebec, where the maximum OAS covers close to 40% of a typical starting rent. In Ontario's premium tier, starting prices in the top tenth begin around $5,170.
What fills the gap
For most families, the difference comes from savings, the sale of a home, a workplace pension or family help. Lower-income seniors may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement, up to $1,138.90 a month for a single senior with income under $23,112, and many who qualify never apply.
The practical step is simple: add up a parent's monthly income from every source, compare it with real prices in their city, and do it before a move is urgent. Our guide to senior benefits in Canada lists every federal program and the current amounts.
Every increase to OAS is welcome, but families shouldn't mistake it for a plan. Public pensions were built to keep seniors out of poverty, not to pay for retirement living. The families who cope best are the ones who did this math early, with real prices in front of them.
