My father was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with metastasized cancer to the brain and had limited time left and was unable to live by himself anymore. He was assessed appropriate for a place like Winslowe Ridge and moved there and we were initially very excited. We thought it was going to be a great place for him to live out the rest of his life comfortably with someone checking his blood sugar and helping with his insulin. He was really excited too as the facility seemed very nice. A few family members felt that it wasn't as clean as it could be. That's a minor complaint. The first week he moved in there, his dentures got lost. He had the same plate for years before that. But within a few days, they were gone. The facility refused to replace because no one could prove they got thrown away or tossed in the laundry. I get that, there's no proof. After he had been there for a month and a half, he was found unresponsive one morning. They called paramedics and he was given IV glucagon and he came back around. The doctor there said they would adjust his insulin down a bit and it shouldn't happen again but said something to my sister about he couldn't be sure about the quality of the night staff. That said, there was one very sweet PCT who asked my dad if he would like to skip his evening insulin the next night, and he did, and he was fine. However, two days after he was found unresponsive the first time, he was found again. This time glucagon hadn't brought him back around so we thought the worst, stroke, seizure, something because of his cancer. NOPE. It was the blood sugar. It took him a week to get his speech back, and he has never fully recovered. He has now been moved to a new facility, long term care facility, and will not be going back to Winslowe Ridge. He is bedbound before he should have been, and had a significantly faster decline than was necessary. The night before he was found the second time, he had been able to use his walker to get to the bathroom, take a shower, and get himself to bed and call my sister and tell her good night. Now, he can do none of those things. I went to talk to the management of the facility with my sister and her husband. It took them 45 mins to even say "sorry" and only when I said that not one person here has even apologized for allowing my father's blood sugar to drop. Apparently their policy is they check glucose when they give insulin and if it's greater than 5 they give it. That is a HORRIBLE way to manage blood sugars. anyone who works in a medical field should know that. I wouldn't have been as upset if it was the first time....accidents happen and no harm was done. But this time, harm was done. I would strongly encourage anyone who has a family member who is diabetic or needs anything other than a bed to sleep in to consider a different facility. This one has cleanliness issues, loses people's things and doesn't apologize, and essentially kills your family members through poor medical management and insight.
