How much do counsellors & therapists cost in Victoria?

How to choose counsellors & therapists in Victoria

Victoria has a genuinely strong network of counsellors and therapists who work with older adults, and that's a real advantage for families here. The city's compact size means that whether your parent lives near Royal Jubilee Hospital in Quadra Village, out in Saanich, or closer to the waterfront in James Bay, a clinic visit is rarely a long trip. That said, compact doesn't mean effortless. Waitlists for publicly linked counselling (through your parent's GP or a community health centre) can stretch several months, so we generally recommend pursuing a private registered clinical counsellor at the same time as any referral, not after.

When choosing a therapist for an older adult, credentials matter more than proximity. Look for a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) or Registered Psychologist with documented experience treating seniors, not just adults generally. Grief, chronic pain adjustment, post-stroke emotional recovery, and caregiver fatigue each need a therapist who has actually sat with those issues before. In our experience, the close call families agonize over is whether to choose someone geographically convenient or someone whose specialization is a better fit. We come down on the side of specialization, every time. The trade-off is that a therapist who works well with seniors may not be the closest to your parent's front door, and getting there could take planning, especially if mobility is a concern.

If driving or transit is difficult, ask directly about telehealth or home-visit options before you book. Many Victoria counsellors offer video sessions, which can be a genuine lifeline for seniors in Oak Bay or the Westshore who find getting out of the house on a dark January morning harder than it sounds. Telehealth does ask more of the client technically, and some older adults are less comfortable on camera, so it's worth a frank conversation upfront. If your parent also works with an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist through our listings, ask those providers if they have counselling referrals. Coordinated care teams in this city do talk to each other, and a warm referral often moves faster than a cold booking request.

  • A registered psychologist, social worker, or psychotherapist experienced with older adults
  • Comfort with grief, anxiety, depression, and major life transitions
  • Phone or video sessions if getting out is hard

Frequently asked questions

Is counselling covered by BC's provincial health plan for seniors?
Most private counselling in Victoria is not covered by BC's provincial health plan. Your parent's GP can refer to publicly funded mental health services, though waits can be long. Some extended health benefit plans cover a portion of registered counsellor or psychologist fees, so check your parent's existing coverage first.
How do I choose between a registered clinical counsellor and a registered psychologist for my parent?
Both are reputable. Psychologists can conduct formal psychological assessments; counsellors often have more availability and lower fees. For most seniors dealing with grief, anxiety, or life transitions, a senior-experienced RCC is a solid first choice. Choose based on fit and demonstrated senior experience over title alone.
How do I check availability and book a first appointment in Victoria?
Contact two or three counsellors from this page at once rather than waiting on one reply. Ask directly about their current waitlist, telehealth options, and experience with older adults. Many Victoria therapists offer a brief free phone consultation, which is worth using before committing.
My parent lives in a more rural part of Greater Victoria. Are there options beyond clinic visits?
Yes. Many counsellors listed here offer secure video sessions, which work well for seniors in the Westshore or Saanich Peninsula. Some offer home visits on request. Mention your parent's location and mobility situation when you first reach out; most therapists will tell you plainly what they can offer.
Should counselling be coordinated with my parent's other care providers?
We think it should, where possible. If your parent already sees a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or family doctor in Victoria, let the counsellor know. Shared context helps, and providers in this city are often willing to communicate when a client gives permission.
