Is Garaventa right for your parent?
If your parent now uses a wheelchair or scooter, a few front steps can turn every appointment into an ordeal, and you may be the one doing the lifting. A ramp often doesn't fit, or would run the length of the yard.
Garaventa specializes in that problem. It builds lifts that raise a wheelchair up a few steps outside, carry it along a staircase inside, or move it between floors. Its lifts are made in British Columbia, with a branch in Maple Ridge and service centres around BC; elsewhere it sells through dealers.
It suits families who need a lift for a wheelchair, not a seat. If your parent can still walk and sit, a stair lift from another maker is usually simpler and cheaper.
Our take: For entry steps, a Garaventa vertical platform lift is often the better buy than a long ramp: it takes less space and less effort for whoever is pushing. Inside, a platform lift on the stairs makes sense only when an elevator isn't possible, because it's slower and blocks the staircase when in use.
Which Garaventa products are sold in Canada?
Genesis vertical platform lifts
A platform that raises a wheelchair straight up, carrying 340 kg (750 lb). Comes open (OPAL, for a rise up to 63 inches), with its own enclosure, or in a shaft your builder makes.
Best for: Entry steps, a porch, a garage or a split level.
Elvoron CPL
A vertical lift with a full-height cab that can travel up to 7 metres (23 feet) floor to floor in Canada.
Best for: Going between floors in a wheelchair when a full elevator isn't needed.
Artira, X3 and Xpress II inclined platform lifts
A folding platform that travels along the staircase. Artira handles curved and spiral stairs; X3 is for straight stairs in a home and usually installs in a day.
Best for: A wheelchair user in a home where an elevator can't fit.
Elvoron home elevators
A full home elevator with a closed cab, custom-sized to the house, serving up to about 15 metres of travel.
Best for: Multi-storey homes and long-term wheelchair use.

Can you get help paying for Garaventa?
- March of Dimes Home and Vehicle Modification Program (Ontario)
Platform lifts are eligible: up to $15,000 over a lifetime for households earning under $60,000. Apply and get approval before you buy.
- Home Accessibility Tax Credit (federal)
Up to $20,000 a year of renovation costs for a person 65 or older or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, including lifts.
- Other provinces
Alberta's RAMP, BC's RAHA rebate and Quebec's home adaptation program can all help with a wheelchair lift; check the current terms first.
How do you buy and install a Garaventa lift?
Where to buy
In BC, Garaventa sells and services directly from Maple Ridge, with service centres in Victoria, Kelowna and Greater Vancouver. Elsewhere, you buy through a Garaventa dealer, who measures, quotes and installs.
Permits and installers
Platform lifts and elevators are regulated equipment in most provinces, so a licensed lift mechanic installs them and many need a permit and inspection. The dealer should handle both; ask in writing.
If your parent already has a Garaventa elevator
In 2022, Health Canada recalled some older Savaria and Garaventa home elevators with swing doors, because a child can be trapped in the gap between the door and the cab. Ask your dealer whether your model needs the free space guard.
Protect your parent from pressure sales
Get two quotes, each with the model, enclosure, permit, installation and the first year of service named. A dealer who won't put the warranty terms in writing isn't the one to choose.
Where can you buy Garaventa near you?
These local businesses name Garaventa on their own website. Ask each one whether it is an authorized Garaventa dealer and who handles service and warranty work.
What are the alternatives to Garaventa?
- Savaria platform lifts: The same parent company, with its own wheelchair and porch lifts and a wider dealer network outside BC.
- A wheelchair ramp: Cheaper for one or two steps, if there's room for a gentle slope.
- A porch lift: A simpler outdoor lift for entry steps from several makers.
- Stiltz home lift: A through-floor lift with room for a wheelchair, without a shaft.
