Is Savaria right for your parent?
If the stairs have become the hardest part of your parent's day, a lift can be what lets them stay in the home they love. Savaria has made accessibility lifts in Canada since 1979, with factories in Brampton, Surrey and Magog.
It also owns Handicare, one of the best-known stair lift makers, which it bought in 2021. So a Handicare stair lift is now a Savaria product too, sold and serviced through the same dealers.
Savaria suits families who want a Canadian maker with local service. It's rarely the cheapest quote, and it isn't meant to be: you're paying for a lift that will be serviced for years by people nearby.
Our take: For a straight staircase, a Handicare straight stair lift from a Savaria dealer is the safe, sensible default. Consider a home elevator only if your parent can't safely sit, stand and transfer on a stair lift, or will need a wheelchair between floors. Always get at least two written quotes, and never sign on the first visit.
Which Savaria products are sold in Canada?
Stair lifts (Handicare 1100, 1000, K2, Freecurve, 4000)
A seat that travels up the staircase on a rail. Straight models install in hours; curved ones are custom-made for your stairs.
Best for: A parent who can still sit and stand safely but finds the stairs tiring or risky.
Through-floor lifts (Telecab, Luma)
A small lift that travels through a cut-out in the ceiling between two floors, with no shaft to build.
Best for: Two-storey homes where a full elevator is too much work, including some wheelchair users.
Home elevators (Eclipse, Infinity, Zenith)
A full elevator in a shaft built by your contractor. Eclipse is Savaria's best-seller; Infinity is hydraulic and needs a machine room.
Best for: Homes with three or more levels, or a wheelchair user who needs every floor.
Vuelift panoramic elevator
A glass or acrylic elevator that stands on its own, so no shaft is built. It needs only a shallow pit of 3 to 12 inches.
Best for: Families who want an elevator without major construction.
Wheelchair and porch lifts (V-1504, Delta)
A platform that lifts a wheelchair up a few steps outside, or along a staircase.
Best for: Getting a wheelchair or scooter in and out of the house.

Ranges are what installed lifts cost in our directory and from Canadian dealers as of October 2026. Savaria publishes its own prices in US dollars only: about US$3,300 to $5,000 for a straight stair lift and from about US$30,000 for a home elevator, before the shaft. Annual maintenance is extra, and it's needed to keep the parts warranty.
Can you get help paying for Savaria?
- Home Accessibility Tax Credit (federal)
Claim up to $20,000 a year of renovation costs, including lifts, for a person 65 or older or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. A relative can claim it.
- Medical Expense Tax Credit (federal)
A power-operated lift can count as a medical expense with a prescription; you can claim it alongside the accessibility credit where both apply.
- March of Dimes Home and Vehicle Modification Program (Ontario)
Up to $15,000 over a lifetime for stair lifts, platform lifts and ceiling lifts, for households earning under $60,000. Home elevators and self-installed stair lifts don't qualify. Apply before you buy.
- Ontario Renovates (your city)
Many Ontario cities offer accessibility grants or forgivable loans for lower-income homeowners. In London, the first $5,000 for accessibility work is a grant (applications close October 30, 2026).
- Other provinces
Alberta's RAMP offers up to $7,500 a year. BC's RAHA rebate and Quebec's home adaptation program also help with lifts; check the current terms before you sign.
How do you buy and get Savaria installed?
Start with a free home assessment
A dealer measures the stairs or space and gives you a written quote. Savaria-owned stores serve the Lower Mainland, most of Alberta, most of Ontario and greater Montreal; elsewhere you buy from an authorized dealer.
How long installation takes
A straight stair lift can often go in within a day or two of the assessment. A curved lift is made to measure first. An elevator is a licensed elevator mechanic's job, never a DIY project, and needs 16 to 25 square feet per floor for the shaft.
Warranty and service
Savaria gives 36 months on parts for its own models, and 24 months on parts plus a lifetime powertrain warranty on Handicare stair lifts. Regular dealer maintenance is required to keep that coverage, so ask what a yearly service visit costs before you buy.
Protect your parent from pressure sales
Ask for the quote in writing, with the model name, installation and the first year of service included. Be wary of anyone who asks for full payment upfront or says a price is only good today. If you're arranging this from a distance, ask to join the assessment by phone or video.
If your parent already has a Savaria elevator
In 2022, Health Canada recalled some older Savaria and Garaventa home elevators with swing landing doors, because a gap can trap a small child. Savaria sends free space guards; ask your dealer if your model is affected.
Where can you buy Savaria near you?

What are the alternatives to Savaria?
- Stannah stair lifts: A long-established stair lift maker, a good second quote for a curved staircase.
- Bruno stair lifts: Known for sturdy straight and curved models sold through mobility stores.
- Stiltz home lifts: A compact through-floor lift that plugs into a regular outlet, a common alternative to the Telecab.
- Moving the bedroom downstairs: Often the cheapest option, if the main floor has room and a washroom.
