Dr. Chen is a very caring, humble, thorough and knowledgeable doctor. I have muffled hearing and pain in my right ear (Eustachian tube dysfunction). He performed a hearing test and then went over the results with me. He then proceeded to ask me questions to better understand my symptoms. He was very understanding of the fact that even though the hearing test results were perfect I had problems with my ear. The ENT doctor at Maple ENT Clinic that I had visited previously simply performed a hearing test and due to the results looking good they dismissed me. They did not offer any further assistance or suggestions to help address my issues, neither did they offer to have a follow-up appointment to monitor progress. Dr. Chen on the other hand, performed a non-invasive procedure which immediately delivered relief and provided multiple options that I could explore to help my hearing situation. Having followed his advice I started seeing improvements in my hearing. I will recommend my family doctor to send ENT patients to Dr. Chen as he listens very attentively, performs a very thorough examination and provides very helpful advice and support to patients.

Mixed feelings about my visit to this clinic. The ENT Dr. Stephen Chen already seemed disgruntled (perhaps by his previous patient) when I entered his examination room. He proceeded to clean my ears of wax and then began complaining that patients always come unprepared and that GPs should be advising their patients to prep their ears (I presume with oil) before their appointments with him. I wanted to point out that when his office called me to make the appointment, I asked if anything should be done on my part to prepare, and they said no (but I didn't mention this this because he already seemed pissed off). If this is a common problem for Dr. Chen, his office should be advising patients on how to prepare for their appointments. He proceeded to say that if he could not clean the wax from my ear, we could not proceed with the hearing test. Ultimately, he did clean the wax from my ear, and asked me if my hearing was better. My answer was no. Dr. Chen then said that ear wax build up doesn't affect hearing as much as people think it does anyway (which made me wonder why we wouldn't have been able to proceed with the hearing test if he was unsuccessful with the cleaning 🤔). Dr. Faranak was a wonderful audiologist. Answered all my questions and gave me helpful tips in improving my ability to hear, even though my hearing test was in the normal range. I was then sent back to Dr. Chen for further discussion regarding my results. In conversation, he said he has never had a hearing test. I said I thought that it was funny, that he was an ENT and never had a hearing test. He answered that there was no need for him to take a hearing test and didn't understand why I thought it was funny. (Honestly, I was just trying to make small talk and be friendly, but I also assumed an ENT would be required to experience a hearing test in order to be familiar with the audiologists methods and patient experience during the examination process). But he seemed to take offense and likened it to an oncologist taking chemotherapy drugs if they don't have cancer...not at all an equivalent comparison and rather extreme, but ok. Since my hearing test was normal, he explained I could have a disorder whereby my ears function just fine, but my brain doesn't process the sounds effectively. Then Dr. Chen said that he had this disorder for about a year, but it went away on its own. How did he know he had this disorder, if he has never had a hearing test? 🤔 He didn't answer my questions regarding a potential connection between my sinuses and hearing, as I am prone to muffled hearing during allergy season when my sinuses are congested. Would I go back to or recommend Dr. Chen to family friends: no - his information was conflicting at times and he frankly seemed arrogant and angry for no reason (but perhaps I rubbed him the wrong way or caught him on a bad day). Would I go back to or recommend Dr. Faranak to family and friends: absolutely! She was lovely, informative and professional.

The ENT Dr. Stephen Chen was very efficient, precise and with a lot of useful insights that no other ENT could provide previously in my case. His appointment was smooth, with faster admission than the other place I had visited in Vaughan, and the clinic was very clean with sufficient space. The audiologist, Dr. Faranak Sakhdari was wonderful, she was caring, knowledgable, relatable and very thorough in her diagnosis. The hearing test involved more steps than other clinic I have been to which goes to show the level of thoroughness and effectiveness of the examination.
