Our family found it very stressful to have a loved one at Cadbury Commons. Positives? The “non-skilled” care people who do the actual day to day care of the impaired residents seem well intended and are very kind and helpful. They offer some nice and consistent daily activities/events for the elders. Locale is great if you live in or near Cambridge. Needs improvement? Most significantly, we experienced inconsistent communication, lack of clarity on procedures, and often contradictory information from administration/leadership. Responses to our communications were often unreasonably delayed, incomplete/inconsistent, or sometimes not responded to altogether. Promises were made prior to move in for very individualized care of our cognitively impaired loved one but not followed through after move in. Medication admin practices were sometimes unclear, making it difficult for us and our loved one's provider to assess the effectivity of our loved one's prescriptions. Elder care is extremely challenging and facility staff anywhere is often overworked, stretched thin, and short on time. I believe those who do this work are deserving of gratitude, Cadbury Commons included. However, transparency and a collaborative approach from leadership at any care home is so important. The leadership team sometimes seemed annoyed by our family involvement and regularly ambiguous in their communication. The standard assisted living residential area is fairly pleasing to the eye (nice library sitting area, cute antique doll house in entry, and a lovely seasonal garden, etc.) but behind the memory care unit door (“Morningside”), we consistently observed sticky common area floors, dirty and unmaintained carpets in the hallway and our loved one's room, and stale air. Memory care common area lighting is fluorescent and has one small window on one side. The memory care area lacks natural light and space, feels confined and institutional, providing a questionable sensory experience for those with dementia. If you live nearby and can frequently be physically present with your loved one, you may be satisfied or have a different kind of experience. Our loved one was indeed physically safe. But for a care home to really ascend to a higher quality of life for an elder person with a cognitive impairment, providing a well thought out physical environment and clear and transparent communication between their family and the leadership overseeing their care are imperative. In this way, most crucially, Cadbury Commons was not a fit for our family. Those in elder care typically care deeply, and truly are deserving of high praise for their devotion to this very demanding line of work. If leadership at this care home are able to improve the functionality of their communication and follow through and give more attention to the physical environment in the memory care area of the facility, Cadbury Commons has the potential to be of higher quality.

When mom got sick I visited many assisted living places. I picked Cadbury Commons. I am confident that mom receives good care. There's good communication from the director and her staff. Mom is doing well there. One thing I like is that when possible they arrange for services on-site. Currently they offer dental and podiatry services. During Covid, they offered onsite immunizations. Cadbury Commons is right in the midst of the Cambridge community. The building is across from an active public park. In the summer, you can sit out on the front porch and watch the local baseball games as the sun goes down on the far side. During the day the park is a great place for mom to walk. It's family owned and that comes across. There are organized activities for the residents offered by a staff that genuinely cares. The building is well kept up. In the front, there are always flowers growing, and in the back there is a community garden and patio. My brother came to visit after mom was settled in. He works in emergency services and has been to many assisted living places on emergency calls; many more than I visited when we were choosing a place for mom. He was impressed. That for me counts for a lot.

Cadbury Commons is a wonderful assisted living facility. They have excellent professional staff and offer varied and interesting programs for the residents. The staff are friendly and care about the residents. This is true of everyone at Cadbury -- the management, the professional staff, the front desk staff, the cooks and the maintenance staff. The Cadbury team worked hard to accommodate my elderly friend’s particular needs throughout his 18-month stay at Cadbury. When my friend had to move out of Cadbury for personal reasons, I was struck by how many staff members at all levels of the organization expressed interest, concern and appreciation for him. It takes a sense of mission and clarity to maintain a high level of respect, caring and sensitivity to the many needs of elderly residents day in and day out. Cadbury stands out as a shining light in this regard.
