  We had a comprehensive tour of Hilldale earlier this week, as we begin to explore our options for future needs, and were very impressed by the home and its facilities. Maaja, who led the tour and met with us to answer all our questions, has incredible energy and compassion, and clearly cares about all the residents there. While our family member is still able to live independently at home, what Hilldale offers is impressive and will certainly be considered when needed.

  My sister Michele and I thank Maaja and everyone at Chartwell, for the wonderful introduction to Chartwell retirement residence and the great and knowledgeable tour that was given. We moved my 91 year old dad in to a one bedroom apartment on Friday, March 27th. The move went smooth,and all of his family was there as well to help him transition. He was a little nervous at first about moving out of his home, but over the past few days, it sounds like he is settling in just fine. He likes the staff there, has met some of the other residents and chatted up a storm,and also the good meals being served each and everyday. With that, I think overall that Chartwell is a great place for all seniors, and look forward to continue working with all the staff during the time my dad is living there. Karen Kingsborough

  My mother at age 80 in early stages of dementia could no longer manage at home. Her life at that time was chaotic and stressful. She had been in and out of the hospital and it look like at that point the remainder of her life would be spent either there or in a long-term care bed. However, in attempt to change that outcome her Geriatrician recommended we try retirement living at the Chartwell on Hilldale Rd. She moved in to a very spacious and comfortable apartment with a view of Lake Superior in October or 2017. While apprehensive of how she would manage, we were quickly and pleasantly surprised how her well-being improved. With the assistance of Homecare and Chartwell staff to que her and administer regular medication, she verbalized repeatedly how safe she felt in her new place of residence. In addition, she started eating well again, enjoying the meals and became active taking part in a variety of social activities. Bingo, music and art were regularly scheduled and a huge hit. Bingo and music were a big part of her entire life and she couldn’t have been more excited to have both available to her under one roof. With good fortune, a Patsy Cline impersonator (her favorite artist) along with Roy Orbison (another favorite) performed at the home within the first week of her residence. Attending the performance with her, my mother was in heaven and tears of happiness belting out every lyric of every song by both performers. The event was topped off by a photo with Patsy that remained in her apartment for the entire 6 years of her residence there. What was more surprising was how she flourished at craft activities. Her artistic creations were very good and her paintings amazing, giving her a real sense of accomplishment, pride and joy. Further to the above, she met and connected with a number of other residents of the facility during meals and social activities. There were no shortage or lack of variety of social events that helped brighten her day and make significant connections and feelings of well-being. As her medical condition worsened, the staff and homecare assistance were increased to support her health and daily activities until the point recently where she could no longer live independently. Throughout, the communication and support of management and staff to myself and family was excellent. We are very thankful to everyone involved at Chartwell for improving the quality of my mothers past six years of her life.
