I visited my mother a couple days ago and I am appalled at what I saw while visiting. I will definitely be reviewing my decision to use this facility. The staff have a nonchalance and are carefree when there are residents screaming for help or are in states of undressing or are obviously in dire need of using a toilet or getting a change of clothes. My mother was complaining of being in extreme pain and I had to tell the nurse on the floor, at least 4 times over a period of an hour before she came. I can’t imagine how long my poor mother would’ve had to wait if she didn’t have me going to the nursing station over and over until they decided they had time to administer her something for her pain. I originally thought that the ministry taking over this facility was a good thing, but now I’m not sure if they have even done anything.

My mother was a resident in the dementia ward a number of years ago. Unfortunately I live in SW Ontario and wasn't able to visit often but when I did go to see her the conditions were horrendous. Other residents walked in and out of her room constantly, using her toilet (which was always full and reeked), and stealing her jewelry and snacks. When I complained the staff claimed there was nothing they could do about this. Whenever I saw my mother she was unclean and her pants were full of urine and feces. The staff claimed they didn't have enough staff to deal with this. She wasn't able to speak much and she was very drugged. Someone discovered her in a heap on the floor one night, unconscious and barely breathing and she was transferred to the hospital. Who knows when she fell or how long she lay on the floor soaked in urine and feces before someone finally found her? She died a few days later. She died from neglect at this facility. I didn't have POA and wasn't able to move her to a better facility. A few years after mom passed away I began seeing news stories about the terrible treatment of other residents and I was heartbroken because my worst fears surrounding her mistreatment and death were validated and I really thought (hoped) this place would be shut down. Even with a new Board of Directors I doubt anything will change because they don't witness the day-to-day goings on in that place and more residents will die.
