  I recently assisted in the return of a relative from a nursing home in the Maritimes to Winnipeg, where he would reside in a north Winnipeg care home. Circumstances required the immediate appointment of a Power of Attorney (POA) to handle my relative’s finances. As this relative is physically incapacitated, I requested that a Winnipeg lawyer, Nancy Gonçalves, who I had yet to meet, attend to him in his new care home to lessen his already considerable stress following a three-airport trip across the country. I truly appreciated Nancy’s ready willingness to do so, and was particularly impressed by her gentle and considerate questioning of her new client to confirm his choice of POA. (I believe that it is a requirement of the MB Law Society that all members assure themselves that a client is not subject to today’s society ill – elder abuse). This task was skillfully accomplished, to the satisfaction of all family in the room. As the oft repeated saying goes, “sometimes you get lucky”. We were doubly fortunate in our ‘selection’ of Nancy. I requested the assistance of a lawyer in a western Manitoba town to choose an excellent Winnipeg lawyer, and soon received a single recommendation – Nancy Gonçalves.
