  My Mom was placed in Hardisty Care Centre for a few months while we waited for a spot in one of our preferred facilities to open up. I found the level of care to be excellent. My mom was well looked after, treated kindly, and she really seemed to enjoy the food there as well. The building itself is not great - it is very old and somewhat “institutional” in appearance, and my Mom’s shared room was small, but that’s certainly not the fault of the hardworking staff. They do the best they can with what they have to work with there. A new building is currently being built to replace this facility, so once that is done I am sure this will be a 5-star location. But in the meantime, don’t judge the level of care and concern on the part of the staff by the building itself. I was very happy with my Mom’s care - that part of this review is 5 stars. In my opinion, the building lacks security during the hours that the front doors are unlocked, and vulnerable people are in the front area at all times during this period. It certainly is not only this facility that leaves open access - my research has found that most facilities in the Edmonton region that offer this level of care do not lock their doors during the day or have wander-guard protections in place. Which is surprising to me considering the amount of people who have dementia living here. However, that is something the provincial health care system must address and is not specifically a concern relating to only Hardisty Care Centre. There is no clear line of sight from the front doors to the nursing desk, so if your loved one wanders, please consider asking them to be moved to a higher floor in the building. My Mom has now been moved to her forever home, in a facility closer to the family. However, I was very happy with her stay at Hardisty.

  Trying to write this with as much empathy for the people who work there as they are clearly understaffed and underpaid so this really comes down to Hardisty site management. I feel compelled to have this review serve a a warning for those considering having their loved ones stay here. We were forced to place my 100 year old Mother here as she was occupying a hospital bed and our 1,2,3 choices of long term care facilities had not come open yet (if they ever will). Following are truthful descriptions that my wife and I have witnessed directly and have happened to my mother since she arrived 1 1/2 weeks ago: - even though she begged them not to, forced use of suppositories so they can toilet her at there convenience. She was NOT constipated. - urethra catheter inserted for the supposed purpose of obtaining non contaminated urine sample. Once again, this is being done on a 100 year old woman. - 4 instances where my Mother was discovered crawling on the floor at the foot of her bed because nobody answered her call button to use the bathroom. - contaminated clothes and paper towel left in floor/ behind toilet seat covered in feces. - dementia patients left for hours in chairs, some observed face down in their meals sleeping (thankfully head turned so they can breathe). - It is in my Mother’s medical care orders to bath her which we were told would happen 2-3 times/ week. She has yet to receive a bath (or shower) and keep being told by the care providers the bath lift is ‘broken’ but when the nursing staff are asked they say it’s operational and so they begrudgingly give her a bath. I could go on, but for our first 13 days there I think you get the picture (as is the case everywhere to varying degrees): chronic lack of skilled staff, obscenely low pay for what they do, system that is apathetic to our most vulnerable. What a disgrace.

  Our family member resided at Hardisty Care for a period of twelve months, during which time they received dedicated support from the facility's staff. The entire personnel demonstrated a consistent commitment to her daily requirements and general well-being. The profound compassion exhibited by the care aides was exemplary and deeply appreciated.
