  I would not recommend Southbridge Ottawa – Barrhaven based on my experience. Do not be fooled by the tour. When we first visited, everything looked impressive — modern, bright, welcoming, and like a place where our loved one would receive excellent care. The presentation gave us a very positive impression. There was even a chef, and we believed we had found the right place. Unfortunately, what we experienced after our loved one moved in was very different. Once the residence became full, it felt like there were not enough staff on the floor to properly care for all the residents. I saw PSWs stretched thin and doing other work, including kitchen, laundry, and cleaning duties, while residents still needed help. When a resident needs the bathroom, needs help, is in pain, or is simply calling for reassurance, they should not have to wait because there are not enough people available. I also had serious concerns about the experience and training of some of the nursing staff. Caring for elderly residents requires knowledge, patience, good judgment, and compassion. In my experience, there were times when basic needs were missed and situations did not seem to receive the urgency I would expect when an elderly person was distressed. Communication was another serious concern. I witnessed situations where staff and residents struggled to understand each other. When an elderly person is confused, frightened, in pain, or trying to ask for help, they need to be understood. Communication in those situations is not a minor issue — it can affect a resident’s safety and well-being. I also had serious concerns about medication. Families should not have to repeatedly question whether their loved one’s medications are being given properly and on time. Medication is an important part of a resident’s care, and families should be able to have confidence that it is being handled properly. I had particular concerns about the way some residents were treated at different times of the day, including at night. I personally witnessed care that did not always feel gentle, patient, or respectful. Elderly residents deserve to be handled with dignity and compassion. They are human beings, not tasks to be completed. The food was another disappointment. I found it repetitive and basic, and I had concerns about the variety and nutritional value of the meals. For the amount families pay, I believe residents deserve better. Communication with families was also a concern. Families should not have to constantly ask questions or push for information about their loved one’s care. We should feel that our concerns are being heard and taken seriously. My advice to families is simple: do not rely only on the tour. Visit often and visit at different times of the day, including in the evening. Ask questions about actual staffing and who is caring for the residents. Pay attention to how staff speak to and handle residents when they do not realize a family member is watching. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend that families consider having a camera in their loved one’s room. It can help you understand what happens when you cannot be there and better understand the care your loved one is receiving. Your loved one deserves to feel safe, heard, respected, and treated with dignity. Based on my experience, I would encourage families to do their research carefully and consider all their options before choosing this residence.

  I recently visited this home in search of a good place for my mother. I loved every single thing about it but their waiting list seems to be long.
