Chartwell Prices 2026: What a Chartwell Retirement Residence Costs by City
What Chartwell retirement residences cost in 2026, from 103 published starting prices: medians by province and Ontario city, what care adds, and how to get a real quote.
A Chartwell retirement residence starts at about $3,800 a month in 2026, the median of 103 starting prices Chartwell residences publish (October 2026). In Ontario the median is closer to $4,000, and most families pay $4,000 to $6,000 once care is added.
That puts Chartwell squarely in the middle of the market, not the luxury end. It's the question families ask us most about the brand, so here's what the published prices actually say, residence by residence, and how to turn a "from" price into the number you'll actually pay.
How much does Chartwell cost per month?
Half of Chartwell's published starting prices fall between $2,878 and $4,332 a month, with a median of $3,765. The full range runs from about $1,565 in Quebec to $10,296 at a memory care residence in British Columbia. Those numbers come from the 103 of the 112 Chartwell residences in our directory that publish a price (October 2026).
A starting price is usually the smallest suite with no care added: rent, three meals a day, housekeeping and activities. It's the floor, not the bill. We'll get to what moves it in a moment.
How do Chartwell prices compare by province?
Where the residence is matters more than the Chartwell name. Quebec residences run far cheaper, in line with Quebec's private seniors' residence market as a whole, where lighter-service rental suites are common. Ontario and British Columbia sit highest.
| Province | Residences with a published price | Median starting price | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 62 | $4,044 | $2,699 to $6,979 |
| Quebec | 23 | $2,043 | $1,565 to $3,125 |
| Alberta | 11 | $3,460 | $2,789 to $5,640 |
| British Columbia | 7 | $3,902 | $2,875 to $10,296 |

Which Chartwell residences cost the most in Ontario?
The top of Chartwell's Ontario range starts at $5,300 to $7,000 a month for the suite alone. The highest published starting prices we track are:
- Chartwell Rockcliffe, Ottawa: from about $6,979
- Chartwell Deerview Crossing, Hamilton: from about $5,621
- Chartwell Royal on Gordon, Guelph: from about $5,509
- Chartwell Waterford, Oakville: from about $5,365
- Chartwell Hollandview Trail, Aurora: from about $5,300
Price isn't a sign of trouble here: every one of them holds a Google rating of 4.6 or higher. At the other end, the lowest Ontario prices (under $3,000) tend to belong to independent-living or apartment-style suites, so ask exactly which meals and services are included before you compare.
Is Chartwell expensive compared with other retirement homes?
No. In Ontario, Chartwell's median of about $4,044 sits right at the provincial median of about $4,041 across the 111 residences that publish a price in our directory (October 2026); see our Ontario retirement cost index for the city view. Premium operators run well above that: Sunrise, for example, has a median published starting price of about $5,548.
So our honest take: Chartwell is a solid mid-market choice, and its size is the real advantage. With 112 residences in our directory, averaging 4.59 stars across more than 6,000 Google reviews, you can usually compare two or three Chartwells in the same area. What you shouldn't do is assume every Chartwell is alike. Two residences a few kilometres apart can differ by $1,500 a month and in the care they can provide.
What does care add to a Chartwell bill?
Care is the part that moves the bill, and it's never in the starting price. At Chartwell, as at most Ontario retirement homes, care is added in packages or by the service on top of the suite rate:
- Personal care (help with bathing, dressing, toileting), billed by level
- Medication management, often $300 to $900 a month on its own
- Assisted living or memory care support, where the residence offers it
- Extras like parking, cable, guest meals and some outings
In our experience, a parent who moves in independent and needs more help over a couple of years can see the bill climb $1,000 to $3,000 a month. So the Ontario all-in figure most families land on is $4,000 to $6,000, and a premium residence with real care support can reach $8,000 or more. Our Ontario retirement home cost guide breaks the care tiers down further.
Should you pick the cheapest Chartwell suite and add care later?
Often, yes, and it's one of the smarter economies we see. A modest suite with the right care package usually serves a parent better than a large suite with no support budget left. The suite is where your parent sleeps. The care is what keeps them there.
The trade-off: a very small studio can feel cramped for a couple, or for someone who'll spend more time in their room as needs grow. Tour the smallest suite you'd actually accept, not just the model suite.
How do you get a real price from a Chartwell residence?
Ask for an all-in quote in writing, based on your parent's actual needs today. Every residence will give you one after a short care assessment, even when the website shows only a "from" price.
Ask each Chartwell (and each alternative you're comparing):
- What's the all-in monthly cost for my parent's care needs today?
- How much have rent and care rates gone up in each of the last two years?
- What would move my parent to the next care level, and what does that cost?
- Can this residence provide assisted living or memory care if needs grow, or would we have to move?
- Is there a second-person fee for a couple, or a one-time move-in fee?
In Ontario, a rent increase needs at least 90 days' written notice under the Residential Tenancies Act, but care charges are priced separately, so ask about both. Check any Ontario residence's licence and inspection reports on the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority register before you sign. On Senior Care Path, 62 of the 70 Ontario Chartwell residences we list show a current RHRA licence, linked to the register from each listing.
One naming note: Chartwell now manages the Seasons Retirement Communities portfolio, so Seasons homes in Brantford, Cambridge, London, Milton and Stoney Creek appear on the RHRA register under Chartwell names. If you're comparing a "Seasons" quote, it's a Chartwell-run residence.
You don't have to line these quotes up alone. Start with every location on our Chartwell page, compare it against other homes near your parent, and our advisors can help you make sense of the numbers at no cost.
