  I have been a Registered Nurse for over 47 years and still work on a casual basis. I am often asked where I would place a person with dementia who requires 24-hour safe care within a locked setting. My first answer is always the Courtyards on Eagleson Road. I am so impressed with this intimate, de-institutionalized retirement community that I have placed a close member of my family there. My family’s worries disappeared once we came through the door and have never wavered. There are many reasons for recommending the Courtyards. They have provided years of experience in offering holistic dementia care along with a cozy, flexible, familiar, and quiet environment that provides comforting assistance for the residents with all symptoms of dementia. With the home working closely with Dr. Christine Billie, the medical care needs for the residents is superior. Her experience working also at the Ottawa Hospital, provides up to date physical and mental care for the residents. Another reason is the design of the home. The building consists of four courtyards for resident activities or family gatherings with light streaming in to the halls at all time. Each resident unit has large windows and often garden or shrubs just below the windows. The big activity room, with an entrance for each side of the residence, is large enough for all residents to enjoy the varied activities from sunrise to sunset. Comfy chairs are available for families to accompany their relative. There are additional areas to sit and talk with relative or even watch TV or play a game throughout the facility. Courtyards offers a range of care options often not found in other retirement homes. Care usually only found in long term care can be provided which includes mechanical lifts and 1 to 1 feeding. The staff is one of the main reasons that I recommend Courtyards. RPNs not non-regulated staff give out medications. Staff are warm, welcoming, professional, enthusiastic, respectful, compassionate with an old fashion work ethic. Attending to their clients is their priority. Cleanliness is meticulous of the setting and of the residents. I never once had a concern about my family member as the staff are skilled, detailed oriented and happy in the environment that they work in.

  I just wanted to thank you and the Courtyards team for making the transition for my Dad so easy and welcoming. It made such a difference to have your help with all the logistics, and the care team have been phenomenal in getting to know Dad and understand his preferences. They have been so calm and patient while he adapts to his new surroundings, which gives us tremendous peace of mind. We absolutely love the soothing, beautiful environment, friendly helpful staff, and everything about the Courtyards. Kudos to you and the team, and a huge thank you from us for everything!

  This is a bad place, beware of the smiling faces. It’s been a few years now, but I feel I can finally speak of this. The trauma my grandfather and our family experienced here. We sent my grandfather here under the impression they were a compassionate, professional… all the good things. Not what happened. My grandfather (98yrs old) had lost his wife of 77 years, he had dementia and Parkinson’s. He was a handful and we were told, they were the answer to our breaking hearts. After he had moved into the Courtyard, My grandfather would constantly say, “they change, they change, when you leave they change, when you’re here they’re smiling.” “They” we would come to know, was the staff. One day, we came in for a visit, around 11am. We found my grandfather without a bed frame, mattress on the floor, he was off the mattress on the floor, tangled in his blanket calling for help. No one had checked on him that morning. He had messed himself. His arms were stuck in unnatural position. We rushed for help, I cradled my grandpa and tried to reassure him, while tears poured down my face. Nurses came in, acting agitated. We got him washed and in new clothes got him warm and in his chair. Staff brought in his “breakfast” it’s 12pm by now, straight from the fridge, stating, “he likes it cold!” This man will not even eat a sandwich cold! They were lying. We had to fight to get him transferred, when we finally got the approval, they gave us 24 hours to get out. Beware, if you’re considering this place.
