Do this next

  1. Pick your parent's city below and compare the local list
  2. Call 811 to ask for an assessment for publicly funded care
  3. See what residences cost in Calgary and Edmonton

Our take: Do both at once: ask for the 811 assessment and tour two or three private residences in the same month. The assessment tells you what public care your parent qualifies for, and the tours give you a plan if the wait for a Type B space is long.

What is assisted living called in Alberta?

Alberta uses two terms. Supportive living accommodation is private assisted living: a residence where your parent rents a suite and buys meals and care, and the operator decides whether it's a fit. It "isn't assessed or publicly funded," as Assisted Living Alberta puts it.

A Type B continuing care home, formerly called designated supportive living, is the publicly funded version. It provides "24-hour onsite personal care from health care aides" with a licensed practical nurse on site around the clock, and a secure Type B option offers dementia care. You don't choose a Type B home directly; you're assessed for it.

How do you get a publicly funded Type B space?

Call Health Link at 811, or the Assisted Living Alberta access centre at 1-855-371-4122, to arrange an assessment. Anyone can call 811 for a family member who can't call themselves (how to access continuing care). A case manager assesses your parent's needs and, if a Type B home is the right fit, arranges the placement.

Residents pay an accommodation charge set by the province: from August 1, 2026, the maximum is $83.05 a day for a private room, about $2,500 a month, and $71.85 for a shared room (accommodation charges). Low-income residents can get help through the Alberta Seniors Benefit and keep at least $373 a month for personal spending.

How do you compare private supportive living?

Private residences set their own rent and care prices, so ask each one for its full price list at your parent's care level, not only the suite price. Ask who provides care at night, how medication is handled, and what happens if your parent needs more care or develops dementia.

Alberta's Assisted Living Navigation Portal lists supportive living residences with fees, licensed spaces and contact details. Our Calgary and Edmonton cost guide shows what residences publish, and home care in Alberta covers the option of staying at home with help.

What about seniors lodges?

Seniors lodges are a lower-cost option for independent seniors 65 and older: a room, meals, housekeeping and activities, run by local housing providers that set their own rates. They're not for people who need daily personal care, though home care can visit a lodge. Low-income residents keep at least $373 a month after lodge fees (affordable housing programs).

Frequently asked questions

How much does assisted living cost in Alberta?

Private supportive living is priced by each operator; the median published starting rate is shown at the top of this page, with care added on top. A publicly funded Type B continuing care home charges a provincial accommodation fee, up to $83.05 a day for a private room from August 1, 2026, about $2,500 a month.

What is designated supportive living called now in Alberta?

A Type B continuing care home. Alberta's Continuing Care Act renamed designated supportive living as Type B, and long-term care as Type A. Private assisted living is now called supportive living accommodation.

How do I apply for assisted living in Alberta?

For a publicly funded Type B space, call Health Link at 811 or the Assisted Living Alberta access centre at 1-855-371-4122 to arrange an assessment with a case manager. For private supportive living, contact the residence directly; the operator decides whether it's a fit.

Does the Alberta Seniors Benefit help with assisted living?

It helps with publicly funded continuing care homes: seniors there can get a higher Alberta Seniors Benefit and the Supplementary Accommodation Benefit toward the accommodation charge. The province doesn't list private supportive living as covered, so ask the residence about other help.
