What is assisted living called in Ontario?

Ontario has no separate assisted living licence. Assisted living is the care a licensed retirement home provides: help with bathing, dressing, medication and getting around, often on its own floor or wing.

That's why most residences on this page also appear on our retirement homes in Ontario list. Here they are ranked for families who already know their parent needs daily hands-on help.

How do you judge an assisted living residence?

Ask for the care price list, not only the suite price. Care is usually sold in packages or by the minute, and the gap between two residences can be larger than the gap in rent.

Then ask who gives the care at night, how medication is handled, and what happens if your parent starts to need two-person help or shows signs of dementia. A residence that has a memory care floor or a clear plan for higher care is worth a premium.

Before a tour, our retirement homes vs assisted living guide helps you match the level of care to what your parent needs.

When is home care the better choice?

If your parent is safe at home and needs help for a few hours a day, private home care can cost less and avoids a move. Once help is needed several times a day, or at night, a residence usually costs less than round-the-clock care at home.

Our home care vs assisted living guide compares the two at the same hours of care, and home care in Ontario lists the agencies.

Frequently asked questions

How much does assisted living cost in Ontario?

The median published starting rate is shown at the top of this page, from the residences that post prices. Care packages are added on top and can raise the monthly bill by several hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on how much help is needed.

Is assisted living covered by OHIP?

No. Assisted living in Ontario is private-pay. Ontario Health atHome may add some publicly funded personal support in the suite, and the care portion of the bill can count toward the medical expense tax credit with the right receipts.

What's the difference between assisted living and long-term care in Ontario?

Assisted living is private-pay care inside a licensed retirement home, for people who are medically stable. Long-term care offers 24-hour nursing, is government-funded with a set co-payment, and is arranged through Ontario Health atHome, usually with a wait.

Can a couple live together in assisted living?

Often, yes. Many Ontario residences offer two-bedroom suites where one partner receives care and the other lives more independently. Ask about the second-person fee and whether the care package can be set for each person separately.
