Our take: Shortlist three homes in one city, not ten across the province. Tour all three in the same week, at lunch, and ask each for its full care price list in writing. The home that answers clearly is usually the one that runs well.

How do you compare retirement homes in Ontario?

Start with the city, not the brand. Most families want a parent within a 20-minute drive, and the city pages below rank only the homes in that area.

Then compare three things side by side: the all-in monthly price at the care level your parent needs today, the price one care level up, and how the home handles a move to more care. A low base rent with expensive add-ons often ends up costing more than a full-service home.

Every home here shows its licence status with the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority where we could match it. Our RHRA guide explains how to read inspection reports before you tour.

What does a premium Ontario retirement home buy?

Homes priced well above the median usually include more in the base rate: two or three meals with choice, weekly housekeeping and laundry, a care check-in each day, and a nurse on site around the clock rather than on call.

The real value is in staffing and continuity. Ask how many personal support workers are on the floor at night, how long the director of care has been there, and whether the home can add medication help or bathing support without a move.

Retirement home, assisted living or long-term care?

In Ontario, retirement homes are private-pay and licensed by the RHRA. Many offer assisted living care inside the same building, so a parent can add help with bathing, dressing or medication as needs grow. Compare those homes on our assisted living in Ontario page.

Long-term care is different: 24-hour nursing, government-funded, and arranged through Ontario Health atHome with a wait list. Our retirement homes vs assisted living guide walks through which fits your parent today.

Frequently asked questions

How many retirement homes are there in Ontario?

The RHRA licenses several hundred retirement homes across the province. We list every one we can verify, with the count and ranking shown at the top of this page, and add new homes as they open or claim a listing.

Are Ontario retirement homes licensed?

Yes. Every retirement home in Ontario with six or more residents that provides at least two care services must hold a licence from the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority. You can look up any home and its inspection reports on the RHRA public register.

Does OHIP pay for a retirement home?

No. Rent, meals and the care packages a retirement home sells are private-pay. Ontario Health atHome can still send some publicly funded home care into a retirement home suite, and part of the care cost may count toward the medical expense tax credit. Ask the home for a receipt that splits care from rent.

Which Ontario city has the most retirement homes?

Ottawa and Toronto have the largest choice in our directory, followed by Hamilton, London and Mississauga. Smaller cities often have only a handful, so families there tour every option and widen the search to the next town.
